SEX OFFENDER HALLOWEEN COMPLIANCE

Nov 1, 2005
Did your child trick or treat at the home of a sexual offender last night? Last week we told you about a series of rules in place designed to keep kids safe.
According to a probation and parole officer, convicted offenders were required to be inside their homes and weren't supposed to have any contact with kids.
Nightside reporter Sarah Dallof went to several homes listed on Idaho's sexual offender database and tells us what she found.
We found that the majority of homes were clearly in compliance: Lights out, doors shut.
But then we found a possible loophole in the system and a man listed as a violent sexual predator handing out candy.
The man was convicted of two counts of sexual assault in the second degree, but he answered the door to at least two trick or treaters.
That means someone the state considers a violent sexual predator was personally handing out candy to children last night.
Violent sexual predators in Idaho Falls are handled by the Bonneville County Sheriff's Department and aren't required to follow the same rules as offenders who are currently on probation.
No one from the sheriff's department was available last night to tell us if this man was in violation of any laws.
We'll be sure to find the answer to that question and follow up on this story.
