New Web Site Shows Where Sex Offenders Live

Resource Seemingly Offers More Details Than Typical State Registry

UPDATED: 4:25 pm EDT August 18, 2005LOUISVILLE -- New technology is making it even easier for you to keep track of sex offenders in your neighborhood.
A new Web site called mapsexoffenders.com allows users to type in any address to see if there are registered sex offenders living in the area, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Paul Moses reported Wednesday.
Two brothers in Utah developed the site. It's still being refined, but so far, it's linked to criminal databases in 36 states, including Kentucky and Indiana.
"Parents really want this information, and the government has said that it's available," said Mark Olsen, one of the site's developers. "So we're not going out and creating this information. We're simply mapping what's already available. We're making it easy to use and (it's) interactive."
Most state databases include only a list of offenders and their addresses, Moses reported. But the Olsons said they hope the moving map creates a better sense awareness for users.
Once an address is entered, markers will pop up in areas where sex offenders live. If you click on the marker, you'll find a picture of the offender, his address and details about his crimes, Moses reported.
"It would be a great tool for parents who are concerned (about) who lives in their neighborhood," Floyd County Sheriff's Office spokesman Frank Loop said. "We have calls on a regular basis, and people ask, 'Do you have anybody that lives in our neighorhood that I should be worried about?' And we try to share that information with them. However, this is a lot easier."
